I have a 99 cougar that when I start it I have to pull the shifter all the way down to 1then back up to R to get it to start. And now it won't even start doin that. Took it to a mechanic he says its the transmission range sensor. I am goin to replace it but cannot seem to findit on the transmission. Every time I ask I get told a different place any ideas? .... Oh and my ac stopped blowing two days before it stopped starting..

It is on the top of the transmission near the shifter cable. See pic attached.

You will need a special tool to align the sensor when you install it. Most parts stores will lend or rent them to you.
