My '99 Slk230 dies after short drive of a mile (entermitent). Will not restart unless I park it, take out key, tap key remote control unlock botton and restart. After stalled it will not keystart directly. All panel lights function and there is no error messages. MB is guessing the K40 relay. Another owner said ring (transponder) on switch is not tight. What is a ring (transponder) on switch? Help me.

Anti-theft system is a contact controlled system. Anti-theft system is activated and deactivated by locking or unlocking driver's door or trunk with key or remote control transmitter. Anti-theft system is activated within approximately 15 seconds after locking vehicle. When anti-theft system is triggered, an audio horn will sound and exterior lights will flash. Anti-theft system monitors all doors, hood, glove box door and trunk lid position. See Fig. 1.
Vehicle may also be equipped with anti-tow system. This system will trigger alarm system if vehicle is towed or raised in a manner that simulates a towing attempt. Anti-tow system can be disabled by turning ignition on and depressing switch in instrument panel. When anti-tow system is off, light in switch will come on. Anti-tow system will remain off until vehicle is locked again with key or remote transmitter.
Anti-theft system is triggered when door, trunk, hood or storage compartment between seats is opened or if vehicle is lifted. When anti-theft system is triggered, an audio horn will sound for approximately 30 seconds and exterior lights will flash for approximately 3 minutes.

Can you tell me about the location of the anti-theft system in fig. 1 & and the location of the ring on the(transponder)switch as I do not know their locations. Do not have Figure 1 availuable at this time.

Thanks a lot! Getting to know my MB pretty well. Another item that I am trying to locate is that "Ring (transponder) switch".
1. By the way, Took out k-40 Relay cleaned and found no bad solder & all components tight.
2. Cleaned negative batt post.
3. Did find that the ring on the igntion switch was three turns loss, tighted it. No dying on road yet.
4. Battery cranking load down from 650 to 425, is that a factor?
5. Tried to reset maintenace schedule on dash as operator manual states but no change.
THANKS AGAIN, YOUR FEEDBACK IS HELPFUL!

Yes sir! Thought igntion swtich maybe the transponder (auf duestch). Thought it felt a little lose. Guess time will tell if I am tracking issue correctly. Got to drive to dealer tomorrow to get backup key. Will discuss whether or not to replace my neat & clean k-40. Think not. Others have stated issue w/ their crank postion sensor but not seeing that as my issue. What about that six year old battery? Thanks, Dave

Hey Dave,
After two days running, the slk230 would not start in parking lot. Tried several time right away. Got out, waited thiry minutes & retried and she started. All lights in key postion #3 but nothing in #3 start position. So, back to square one. She runs great when she starts.
