I was reversing along a long straight road today and heard a sound coming from the front of the car(under the hood) then I tried reversing up a hill. It starting reversing then it it a big jerk, tires screech as if I was doing a burnout( I was not) and the car stopped. I had to go forward.
Any ideas on what can cause this?

Check the automatic transmission fluid level on a flat surface after the engine is warmed up. If it is low it can cause this concern. If the hill is too steep and the fluid is low it can cause air to get sucked into the transmission oil pump( the transmission uses fluid to operate) causing various issues.
Is there any check engine or service engine soon warning lights on?
If the fluid level is good and there is no check engine light then I would suspect the transmission itself.
