Mazda protege 19999 throws you back

I have an automatic 1999 Mazda Protege. While I'm driving it seems to be hesitating and then throws the car back hard and feels like I hit a brick wall. Any suggestions would help. Thanks! Mary

Symptom indicates a possible fault with the transmission and could be failing or has control problem. Get it checked asap to avoid braking down.
