An exhaust pipe has broken off at the rear interface to the catalytic converter on my 1999 Mazda 626. Can that somehow be patched back together without having to replace the pipe, muffler, tailpipe, etc...? thanks

It would depend on which portion had broken off. Welding can be done only to certain areas if it is external and does not intefere witht he internals of the system. However if pipes are rusted badly, it would have to be replaced as welding one portion would have the other breaking off soon.
