knocking sound

my 99 jeep grand cherokee is making a knocking sound but it still gain speed like it should and the check engine light has not come on what could that be

definately a knock and not a tick or tap? did this start suddenly one day? or gradually become worse over time? ever run low on oil? is it noisier when you accelerate or the same? checked your oil lately? is anything strange about it?
