1999 xj8 jump timing can it be reset car starts and runs but has rough idle.

the ignition timing itself is electronically controlled by the ECM , if you suspect that the timing chain has slipped (not very likely) than the chain will need replaced and aligned properly.

If the timing chain has slipped when taking engine apart do I need to take any precation since timing is off already. Can i just remove heads and chains and then realign. Thanks.

just have to realign the chains to the correct timing marks
