Broken drive shaft, u-joint, shifter cable (automatic). The shop quoted approx. $1,500 to fix. Car has 1 year old newly rebuilt engine and 1 year old tires. Shop suggests selling the car as is for $250.

U-joint or CV Joint? Replace the shifter cable yourself with one from a junkyard CRV. With a $20 Chilton's or Haynes manual, you can do it in about an hour. A front drive axle can also be done.

Is it the 2WD or 4WD?
4WD front axles:

U-joints usually cost about $10 max.

You can probably get the driveshaft at a junkyard for about $50.
