With the key in the off position, press the tripodometer reset button and hold it. Turn the key to the run position (don't start). The light should flash and then reset.

If the light has gone off and stayed off, chances are there will be no code stored in the computer. What to do is this. If it comes on again, have the computer scanned at a parts store. Also, if it is the maint light, turn the key off, push the tripodometer button in and turn the key on while holding it in until the light flashes. That should reset it.

MAINTENANCE REQUIRED REMINDER LIGHT/ENGINE OIL LIFE INDICATOR
RESET - PROCEDURE 3

1. For the first 8000 miles after maintenance required indicator is reset, the MAINT REQ'D indicator light illuminates when the ignition is turned on, then will go out after 2 seconds.

2. When mileage is 8000-10,000 miles, the MAINT REQ'D reminder light will illuminate for 2 seconds, then blink for 10 seconds, and then go out.

3. When mileage exceeds 10,000 miles, MAINT REQ'D indicator light illuminates and stays on while ignition switch is in ON (II)
position.

4. To reset the MAINT REQ'D indicator light, remove ignition key.
Press and hold the SELECT/RESET button.
While still holding button, insert key and turn ignition switch to ON position, with engine off.
Hold SELECT/RESET button for about 10 seconds until indicator resets.

  • 1998 HONDA ACCORD
I purchased a high milege 1998 Honda Accord for my teen-age sons first car. It has been running good and has passed a mechanic's run through for problems.
But recently, the "Maintence" light has come on. Is this a necessary procedure issue or just a light that comes on at set milege rates?
The car is well past maximum miles for the maintence guide. I just don't want to get stuck bringing to a dealer at their prices for a false alarm. Is there a way to reset the light? The car has 175,000 miles on its 4 cyl.

Help!

Sincerely;

Jim Simonsen

As long as it is not the check engine light you are ok. The maintenance light is a regular event and is usually reset by the dealer. The light can be reset by you as well. Nothing to worry about. I think the procedure is to turn the engine off and hold the trip odometer reset while turning the switch to the on position. Hold the button in until the light goes out.

Stupid question but I have a 1998 Accord with a manual that is in French only and I can't find or understand the answer: When the Maintenance Required Lite comes on there is a sequence using the odometer reset knob and the ignition to shut it off once it starts to flash or comes on permanently. I can't remember how to do it. I just changed the catalytic converter and it is now flashing. Please let me know how to shut it off!
Thanks!

Hello !

1. Push in and hold the odometer reset button;

2. While holding in the odometer reset button, insert the key into the ignition and hold for several seconds;

3. Turn key to "on" while still holding in the odometer reset button;

4. Hold in the odometer reset button until all of the warning lights have lit - after about 10 seconds the "maintenance required" light will go off.

Good Luck!

I have a 98' accord, if its definitely maintenance required and not check engine it usually means some sort of routine maintenance oil (usually its oil change for me lol) I notice mine will typically come on after about 5000 miles and I am usually overdue for my oil change lol hope this helps

I have a 1996 Accord and when I took it in for an expensive repair, was told that they would also do an oil change at no charge. When I returned for the car, the oil change detail was not on the receipt so I asked about it, he added the it to the receipt (without writing how many quarts were added). I have noticed that the oil change light (or maintenance required light ) is still on. Is that indicating that they did NOT change the oil as I was told. I'm a bit suspicious. I've had to remind him of other things in the past. Thank you.

No, it does not, you just need to reset the maintenance reminder light.

Resetting the Engine Oil Life Indicator

Your dealer will reset the display after completing the required maintenance service. You will see "OIL LIFE 100 % - on the odometer/ trip meter display the next time you turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position.

If maintenance service is done by someone other than your dealer - reset the maintenance minder as follows:

Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position.
Press the Select/Reset knob repeatedly until the engine oil life indicator is displayed.
Press the Select/Reset knob for more than 10 seconds. The engine oil life indicator and the maintenance item code(s) will blink.
Press the Select/Reset knob for more than 5 seconds. The maintenance items code(s) will disappear, and the engine oil life will reset to 1OO.

The yellow is the warning and the red is the final level of basically nothing. It is like an alarm clock. Yellow is you laying there watching the alarm but red is the alarm going off. You still don't have to get up. The maintenance light is set to go off about every 10000 miles. The maintenance person resets it when they service your car. However, is the owner manual there is a procedure laid out to help you reset that yourself. Don't worry about the light.
