Coolant bubbling out of resevoir

taurus has severe issue with rust and the water pump impeller failing. it needs to be checked by a shop to verify. also, have them do a leak down test to verify the head gaskets are ok. i suggest not driving it until you have this checked.

A quick update. I found that the temp sensors are located right by the thermostat location. The one closest to the firewall has a single wire connected to it on the plug and that one is for the instrument panel temp gauge. I verified this by disconnecting with the car running and the gauge drops totally down. When I disconnected the sensor closest to the thermostat (has 2 wires on that sensor) my fans started running. Took the car for a drive and no overflowing of the resevoir when I turned the car off. I do now have a check engine light on, but I'm guessing that is from the sensor being disconnected. So I'll try to replace the sensor and see what happens.

by removing the wires on the coolant sensor. the computer sees high temp and fires off the fans. it does not mean it is bad.

if there is air in the system and the coolant sensor is not in fluid, it will not fire off the fans. you need to find out why the air is in the system. thats why i said to have the system checked for a head gasket as it will air up the system.

Thanks Roy, you might be right. But I'm going to try the sensor to start with and see what happens as it's a cheap easy fix. Maybe it won't solve the problem, but it's worth a shot. When I did remove the sensor it pretty much came apart at the connector so I need to replace it now anyway.

Replaced the sensor and still have the same symptoms. Bummer.

sorry, we are back to square one. i still think you need to have a leak down test for a possible head gasket. also, the water pump impeller should be checked for being rotted away.
