Is the MIL indicating?
Was anything done prior to this occurring?
Did you check the fuel lines for clogging?

Sorry but I now know that nothing was done prior to the problem
and it started 3000 kilometres ago with the engine coughing and spluttering/missing occasionally when under load. Since then the frequency has increased now it coughs splutters/missses not just under load but not always. It also now stops when idling but always restarts immediately. We have also changed fuel filter. Also what is the MIL?

Malfuntion Indicatr Light. The Check Engine Light.
Symptoms indicates possible misfiring and it could be the fuel pressure, injectors, (spark plugs and leads which you have replaced), ignition coil or engine condition.
Have the engine compression tested
