1999 Ford Falcon Battery smoking

Ok so the car still starts up first go an runs fine however the battery started smoking for a good 20 minutes even more if I start the car while its smoking. Thinking regulator problem but have notice of an idea as to what to do ? Please help need to get on the road asap

Alternator may be over charging, check the charge rate with a volt meter, check at the main alternator terminal and earth using 24V scale, max output should be around 14,5 volts. It the charge rate is to high you will cook the battery.
