I stopped to fill up with gas and when I cut truck back on the gas gauge and the overhead miles to empty quit working. Do you think it will be the sending unit or the gauge

The gauge is not affected by filling with gas. The float arm on sending unit is probably making intermittent contact and will start working again when the fuel level drops. On most Chrysler products that arm can be popped off so the tab can be bent slightly to make better contact. Ford may use a similar design. That repair involves replacing no parts and typically is more effective than replacing the sending unit.
