Where do I put Freon in 1999 Ford Escort Sedan?

The air conditioner cut on and off. I tried to look online to find the low pressure port is on my vehicle and I thought I knew. When I tried the valve did not fit and green stuff came pouring out. I assumed this was the wrong port and did not want to try any further. Please help.

The valve will only fit the low side.
