1999 Ford Escort oil loss

I am searching for ideas on what might be wrong. I am burning about 2-4 quarts of oil in a couple days. after refilling, the oil burning stops for about 3 weeks, then goes through another 2-4 quarts. I have changed the egr valve and pcv valve. any ideas?

check compression first, then check to see if oil return holes in tops of head are blocked by sludge. it cold be valve seals as well or a more larger problem like rings,head gasket.
