99 Ford Escort brakes clapping?

1999 Ford Escort, 110k miles, is making strange sound while braking at low speeds. Sounds like a dull clap or like dropping a piece of metal. Makes the sound only once, and not every time.

I think you are talking about the rear brakes. What it sounds like is that the shoes are not adjusted correctly and there is too much clearance and when the brakes are put on they slap against the drums.
