how do you set the timing on a 1999 ford contour?

If the 8th digit of your VIN# number is "3", then there are no marks. It requires some special holding tools made specifically for that engine to be able to set the timing correctly on that one. Don't even try it if you don't have the tools as if it is done wrong, it will never run right and have a constant check engine light.
