99 ford contour problems

the car was idleing up and down and then the serpentine belt snapped and the cars tempeture began to rise is this a result of the belt snapping and when i replace the belt will the idleing problem go away

HOWEVER, JUST THE DESCRIPTIONS YOU GAVE (IF THIS SORTA OCCURRED ALL AT ONCE), SORTA SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF YOUR PULLEY DRIVEN COMPONENTS MAY HAVE LOCKED UP AND IS NO LONGER TURNING FREELY....CAUSING THE BELT FAILURE

FOR INSTANCE THE BEARINGS IN YOUR BELT TENSIONER WENT BAD OR YOUR A/C PULLEY OR COMPRESSOR HAS LOCKED DOWN......(THERE ARE MORE PULLEYS THAN THOSE TWO)

BEFORE YOU JUST REPLACE THE BELT, INVESTIGATE ALL OF YOUR PULLEYS FOR PROPER OPERATION

I HOPE THAT IF THIS IS THE CASE, IT IS SOMETHING INEXPENSIVE, LIKE THE TENSIONER, AND NOT YOUR A/C COMPRESSOR
