Thank you for your response. Alternator was tested and was okay. I just went outside to start it and now the battery light and ABS light are both off. Does that seem odd. He just replaced the belt this morning and both lights were still on after replacing it.

Here is the long storry: One day I forgot my head ligts on and the battery drained - called a tow truck - jump started the car, went home.

Couple of weeks later the car would not start - no power, out of the blue. Jump started the car again. While going home, stuck in traffic, the battery light came on, a few minutes lated tha car stopped, could not start again.

Called a tow truck, send tha car to a Crhyseler daler, thay said - nothing to worry about, just a loose battery cable. They said checked the battery everything was fine.

Anyway the car was in my garage. I did not drive it for 3-4 weeks and the battery drained again. Tried to jump start - with a lot of attempts, finally managed.

I left the car to idle for 30 minutes to charge the battery. Now the battery light is on again. The batery not charged. My instruments light flicker.

My battery is 2 years old. This is during the summer, so it is not frozen or anything.

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

It sure sounds like an alternater problem to me. You need to be able to check that the output is proper, there are independent shops that can help you ir you can't do it.

I got a 1997 Dodge Caravan. Took the van to autozone had the van checked and he said the alternator is bad. I remove the alt. Took it to autozone and had them bench test it and it passed twice. I left and went to kragen and same thing passed twice. But the odd thing was no one can tell me if it putting out any volts. So I popped the alt. Back in the van charged the battery. Started fine battery light was off then suddenly the van goes dead. I removed the battery took it to pepboys (battery was bad)and had it replaced under warranty. Popped everything back together. Yaahoo? Well the van went dead. What is the problem with the van? Alt. Has passed a bench test what is next?

My battery light in my 97 Dodge Caravan came on back in July for 3 days and then all of a sudden went off and my van has been running fine other than a few other problems that I have since fixed. My question is why would it keep doing that? I took it to three different part stores and they checked it back in July and said that my battery and alternator needed replacing and then it starting working fine. Should I just keep driving it and see if the problem stops or should I take it back to the shops and have them test it again. I did however, take it back when the light went off and it was working properly then. What should I do and what is the problem?

I'd do some testing, when the problem is ongoing. If there was a code, what the actual code number? You may be able to check mil codes yourself. To check for codes, try cycling the ignition switch, you just turn the key till the dash lites come on, no further, no crank, cycle the key on--off, on---off, on, then the mil starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes.

If you have a digital multimeter and want to check the charging system, we can help you with that. Some people want no part of testing, that's up to you. I can't diagnose without testing. Let us know.

My husband was driving it and the battery light came on and then the radio lost power. When he got home he checked the altenator and it was bad so we bought a new one but the battery light is still on and the van will drive for a while and then it will lose power as though the battery is dead. We went to the auto parts store and had them test the battery and they said that the battery was good. What else could be causing my van and battery to die?

Check for power at the power supply th=o the alternator. It should be hot, 12 volts.(The 10 MM bolt with the big red wire) if not check the fuses for a blown fuse. If it is good have the alternator checked to see if you have a defective alternator. It should be only one of the two but if not let me know

This is an extremely common problem caused by worn brushes inside the alternator. On some Chrysler engines the assembly can be replaced without removing the alternator from the engine, but you need room to get the rear cover off. The brush assembly costs around ten bucks, but you might not find it at an auto parts store. Starter and generator rebuilders have them.

The brushes make intermittent contact at high mileage. The first issue is charging system testing has to be done while the problem is occurring, otherwise everything will test fine. To verify this, measure the two voltages on the two smaller terminals on the back of the alternator, but this must be done while the engine is running. One will have full battery voltage. The other one is supposed to have less, but not 0 volts. When one of the brushes is not making contact, you WILL find 0 volts on that second terminal.
