Need catalytic converter. Dealer & repair shop quote $800- $1,000 part & labor. Repair shop $135 labor only - no warrenty. Local auto part store $300 parts. Online $180.
1) Is it safe to buy auto parts online?
2)How hard is it to replace yourself?

I wouldn't choose any of those options. I would take it to an exhaust specialty shop. They will have the most experience and the best prices. You can usually get a universal cat installed for around $200 to $250.
