my 1999 chevy lumina will go in gear but wont go forward or reverse what is wrong

Is the trans fluid clean and full? Have any warning light come on?

its full,I dont know about clean I havent had any filters changed since I had it.it feels like the emergency brake is on when in gear

could it be the filter or dirty transmission fluid.how do you tell?

A filter wouldn't do that. In gear, does the engine rev or does it sound loaded down?
