1999 chevy cavelier

i have a 199 chevy cavalier and the emergency brake light on my dash has started to come on even thought I dont have the emergency brake on once I press on the brakes a couple of time it will go off and then come back on what does this mean?

maybe the e-brake switch is faulty? Just for testing unplug it, see if any effect on the lite. Don't leave it unplugged, I tried that once, my exwife drove the vehicle for 30 miles with e-brake partially set, the rear brakes were smoking like crazy when she pulled into the drive. You guessed it, my fault.
