I changed the head gasket not it turns really fast and backfires.

Are you sure the cam timing is set correctly?It doesn't sound like it is?Have you checked the compression yet?

No how do I check. I do believe the engines turned about a 1/4 turn after I took the distributor out.

If the distributor is miss stabbed then that will cause all this. When you put the distributor back in did you put the engine on top dead center and put distributor back in with rotor pointing at the number 1 post on the disburtor cap?
