Oil leak from the front of engine block (BMW e38)around the fan area under the valve covers, what are possible causes?

Try to clean area so you can better isolate leak. On most cars, usually its where intake manifold meets engine block.

That is not the source or typical for this engine. I was hoping for more specific suggestions.

How bad a leak is it? When you clean it, how long before is returns?

The exploded view can be had at Realoem. Com The timing chain covers can leak, the front covers can leak, the valve covers can leak and at 110k miles, they may all need replacement.

This response is much more informative, in fact I have since checked closer and it is leaking at the upper timing chain cover. The valve cover was done last year and is solid, I will have to do it all over again. Before I do though I am going to add dye and use a UV light to trace any other sources.
Any tips about using dyes?
