my 1999 328i has its check engine light on and EML light and****** from park to drive and when i step on the gas it feels like its gonna die; shifts oddly. any ideas to what it could be?

I request that you seek out someone that has the proprietary BMW scan tool called a GT-1 and have the results read out. This action will eliminate guesswork and have it be much easier to figure out what to do next. The EML light is for the electronic throttle body, something has set a fault and is causing the driveability issues you posted with.
