the check engine light is on

I am looking into buying an 99 Acura slx the check engine light is on and he said his coding machine says misfire what could this be? He said he hauls his boat from the beach every couple weekends and thinks that may be causing it to go and go off later what do you think problem ? Should we purchase it, need safe car for I year old.
