1998 Volkswagen Passat Turn Heater On Smells Smoke Fumes Fix This Reciculating

When I turn heater on it smells like smoke or fumes,how do i fix this? When I turn the reciculating button the smell goes away,as if the smoke comes from the engine.

That is what you need to check. WIth the engine running, open the hood to see if there is a smell coming from there. Also, make sure there are no exhaust leaks.
