Hi my golf 1.9 tdi is running really sluggish and has hardly any acceleration.I have changed the diesel and air filters so it is not them. And when I stop at a junction it does not stall and ticks over fine which makes me think that it is probably not a blockage in the fuel systm either.

Either clogged fuel filter or a failing injector pump

The "crankshaft sprocket" has come loose (broken key).

You need to remove the Timing Belt, remove the crank sprocket, replace the sprocket and bolt. Re-install the timing belt and make sure Injection Pump Timing is correct.

Image of good and bad crank sprocket is attached.

Good luck.

I'm only guessing that this is your problem, as I have seen this happen before.

Before taking anything apart. You can verify if the sprocket is broken or not.

I'm sure one of the experts will help you in determining if it is faulty or not.
