Toyota Camry hesitates upon acceleration

I have a 1998 camry. It sat for about 4 months with a low level of fuel. I tried to drive it the other day and it seemed fine until it literally stopped upon acceleration while going uphill. It seemed 'stuck' (not getting enough fuel). The fuel gauge warning light suddenly read 'E'. The fuel gauge was originally at a third of the way from E to 1/4. I had only driven about 1/10 of a mile, unfortunately down a hill. After putting the car in neutral and ******* it on and off for about 2-3minutes it 'caught'. I then put it in drive and went uphill. This scenario repeated 3-4 times until I made it to my driveway. I went, with another car, got 2.5 gallons of fuel and some "Gumout". I put the fuel in and added about a 1/5 of the gumout liquid. I tried the car again today-not venturing too far- and it happened once more - with fuel gauge going to "E". I again slowly made it back to my driveway.

It historically ran without any problems, and I've had the car for 6 years.

Any guidance is sincerely appreciated.

Do you have a check engine light and when was last tune-up

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-hesitates

Could be caused by one of the following below

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing.
