Driving home last night I couldn't get it into "park" gear. Had to leave it in neutral and turned it off. What could be the problem?

Most cars have a Park lockout system of one kind or another to prevent the steering wheel from locking if the car is not in Park. Some use a cable connected to the ignition switch and some use an electric solenoid. I would expect this one to use a cable which could be broken or out of adjustment.
