have a 1998 Subaru outback with 208k miles. When I drive at around 40mph or more it gives me this siren gear like noise after letting the gas pedal go and still makes that noise when I take it off gear into neutral. Is it the differential that needs the special lube that comes for it or what else could it be?..

Have the wheel bearings checked first.

If it is differential, coasting in neutral should reduce the noise.
