Stuck in Park in cold weather

I have a 98 Saturn SL1 automatic. When it sits outside in very cold weather the gear shift sticks. Car starts great, gear shift button presses in, but the car will not shift gears until it warms up for several minutes. Any help would be appreciated. It seems to be getting worse.

Your going to have to remove the center console to see what is actually happening on the shifter base.When you step on the brake and the shifter won't release can you hear a click at the base of the shifter every time you press the brake?
