What could cause a 1998 pontiac sunfire to stop running all of a sudden and not restart. I can smell fuel and there is lots of battery but it just won't catch.

Have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. The loss of an rpm signal, can kill it like somebody flipped a switch.
