Loud engine noise

My 98 Grand Am sounds like a tractor when I start it up. It just recently started this and its usually very quiet. It also seems like its running rough.

If it has a loud clunking noise, the lower end of the engine (main bearing or connecting rod bearings) may have broken down. Though the engine has low mileage, this is not an impossibility. Have it towed to an engine specialist before additional problems arise. Check the oil level, I am willing to bet that it is fairly low.
