transmission fluid was empty now it wont go over 40 mph

It seems like my car can't go into any higher than 2nd gear, i can't accelerate to even 35 or 40 without reaching 3000 or higher rpm's, it wont shift. I checked the transmission fluid and it is out, but when i added some it didn't do too much to remedy my problem. What is wrong? What should I do?

it is internal and you need a trans shop to identify the failure. it most likely will have to come out and be overhauled.
