Hi
I recently bought a 1998 Olds Achieva. It ran fine on the way home. Then I shut the car off and tried to start it again and it would not start. It runs for maybe 2-5 seconds then just stalls out like it is not getting enough fuel. The security light keeps flashing and we tried the 10 minute fix and this did not work. So we changed the fuel pump and a few other things and that did not fix the problem. Do you think this has something to do with that friggin security system that they put in these cars? Now we are thinking about changing the crank censor. Could this be the prolem. Like I said we tried the 10 minute fix, where you turn the key on and leave it on for 10 minutes then shut the key off and try to start the car. It still stalls out after 2-5 seconds of starting. Oh we even put n a different key switch and had the original key for the new key switch. Any idea what the problem could be? I have put to much money in to this car already and can not take it to the shop.

It may have been only the key to begin with. You should have left the old cylinder in and tried another key. It is the most common issue with this.

You changed the key and now has to be re programmed. Try to start the car, then release the key to the on position. Leave it there for about 10 minutes or till the security light goes out. Repeat this for 3 times then try and start it up. At least that will program your new lock cylinder.

My mistake. My dad does not have the original key or this new key switch. Since he is using the key that he got with the car and changed the key switch, can it be programmed or did he make a huge mistake? Like if I did the quick fix, would this program the key for this key switch? Also when I try to start the car, should I leave the key in that position? Or should I turn it back 1 time to where only the lights come on? Thanks for the help?

It remains in the on position while it is learning. Make sure the key is a chip key, not the skeleton key

Tried the reprogramming, but id did not work. I know it has to be a problem with the security system in these dang cars. The light just keeps flashing. After the 10 minute wait it just stays solid. I am running out of things to try for this problem. Why did the even stick these junky systems in this car? Also, should my key have a chip on it? Cause I do not see one. If there should be a chip, would it be under the coating on top of the key? Thanks for the help.
