I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima with 146K miles and I'm living in north Kansas. When I start my car in the winter early morning for the last few days, the engine is cranking without starting. The battery seems to be fine. The engine will crank for few seconds and it will shut off. After 9-10 tries, the engine will start. After I drive the car for some time and if I start the car within 3-4 hours, it is starting fine. When I went to the mechanic, he is saying that everything seems to be fine with the engine. Can you please provide suggestion what can I do to correct this problem. Thanks!

If the engine hasn't been tuned up for some time, that would be a consideration. Worn plugs or a weak spark makes for a hard start on cold days. Also, he should check the fuel pump pressure when the engine is cold to make sure it is within spec. Finally, there is a temp sensor on the engine that tells the computer how rich or lean to make the fuel mixture based on ambient temps and coolant temp. If it isn't working properly, that can cause this type of problem too.
