My 1998 Mercury Mystique makes grinding noise when i brake or accelerate from a complete stop. The previous owner rolled it into a trailer and crumpled the hood. A mechanic said it was mostly cosmetic damage, but i'm not too sure now. the noise just started yesterday and wasn't too bad. it got a lot worse today.

seems like you may have a bad wheel bearing, does the noise seem to come from one of the wheel areas?

We can guess but that's all it is until someone actually inspects in and sees what the problem is. You could be metal to metal on the brakes or the rotors may have just rusted up among other possibilities..
