Are the rear strut assembly on the 1998 mazda protege one piece or not?

Depends on what you mean by "one piece". The actual shock/strut assembly is one piece. However, the spring, dirt shield and other components are attached.
It can be removed as one unit of that's what you're asking.

The strut itself is one piece but of course the everything else attaches to it like the spring and bearing plate.
