1998 mazda mpv van when you push button for 4wd its acts like its in low and then disengages with a loud thump

Have you checked the actuator on the transfer case?

On the side of the transfer case is an electric motor. When you push the button in the vehicle for 4wd, it receives power and shifts to the requested gear.
