engine tick? Lifters? valve adjustment?

Why does my 1998 lexus gs400 engine tick? Lifters? Do i need a valve adjustment? Its a faint tick and i cannot hear it from the cabin, the car idles and drives perfect.. V8 dealership told me i need a valve adjustment..$600

Might be just a valve lash adjustment or a valve lifter leakdown problem-for $600 someone can do it for less if its just adjustment needed
