The power steering and the brakes go out randomly, usually at the same time. Would that be the master cylinder or could it be the power steering pump?

it could be the pump as it supplies your hydo boost probably as well as steering. check the belt though as those are suggested replacementat 60,000 miles as well as tensioner.
