My trooper began shifting hard occasionally. It progressed and was not displaying proper gears on dash indicator. Determined through other people posting similar issue that it was the range mode switch. Removed and cleaned it and dash indicators returned to normal and shifting improved but still hard shifting from 2nd to 3d up and down. Bought a new range mode switch and installed it today but it still shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd. Any thoughts on what could be my next course of action? Trying to avoid taking to transmission shop and paying $2k for a new transmission.

Have you checked for trouble codes related to the issue? Is the fluid clean and full? When was the last time the trans was serviced with a new filter?
