i have 98 hombre needs motor found a used one but it came out of a 97 the guy at the salvage said they werent compatible, what can i do to make it work

If the engine is not compatible, it is not going to be easy to make it work unless the engine is similar and you transfer whatever external components of your original engine onto the new engine.
