why does my distributor have to be advanced for car to run rite?

my car will over heat unless the distributor is set on advanced and it runs like its out of timing but it cranks up fine???

Right, it could have jumped timing and by advancing it you are masking the symptoms. This would in no way effect the overheating. Unless you are retarded.....
