how do i open the hood of a 98 gmc sonoma after the hood release cable i sbroken?

Is the cable broke or just the handle? If you can get ahold of the cable, use a pair of vice-grips to grab the cable. Have a helper pop the end of the hood, with the palm of their hand, in the area of release mechanism. you pull the cable at the same time.
If that won't work, try removing the front grill, see if you can get at the cable or release mechanism.
