how do you reset the security code for a 98 GMC Sonoma?

Also, What could cause the security code to go on?

Try the relearn procedure. Turn key on, turn key off, then turn key to crank position, no start, leave key on, watch security lite on or flashing. Wait till lite stops flashing, may take ten minutes. Turn key off for 10 seconds, go through procedure twice more for a total of 30 minutes. The relearn should be completed. If that doesn't work, check for applicable trouble codes, see if anything shows up?
