the other night my step son took my ranger w/o permission and landed my ranger in a ditch. from what he told me was that he was stuck in the ditch and was changing gears from D to R with out hitting the brakes. i had to recover the truck out of said ditch. it starts no OD light blinking i can move shift lever through all gear but it will not go into gear. my question is, is there some sort of cable/switch/piece that brakes away so the transmition does not get dammaged?

you mean does ford have a better idea? not on purpose in this case. you will just have to look at shift arm on trans to see if it's functioning.
