1998 Ford Fiesta Engine revving at 4000rpm

I was driving and suddenly the engine just began to rev at 4000rpm. I pulled over and switched it off at this point. I left it a couple of minutes and turned it back on and without touching any of the pedals it began revving at 4000rpm immediately after being turned on.

Have you checked to make sure the throttle cable isn't sticking or the gas pedal isn't stuck on something?
