The truck has been sitting for 4 years 2 years disassembled and the fuel pump will not start My question is can they stop working after that many years or am I missing a connection somewhere.

The inside is most likely rusted and cannot make contact. I would just replace the pump module and move on.

That is about what I was thinking. I know it read how much fuel is in it, but does not prime. Thanks

Try to stay away from just the pump or a build a pump. Replace the entire module.

Pump replaced and truck is running. I do have another question on the trucks transmission. The truck will not move when in gear and running, we can push it forward in neutral but it will not move in backwards when in neutral. I replaced the transmission pump gasket. Could I have put the pump in wrong that would cause this. Or could the wrong gasket cause this.

Nope, it is internal in the trans. Most likely will have to come out and be overhauled.
